Balron Battlethirst.Dwarf Fighter (Demon Assassin) Born in battle, lived in battle, ascendant in death. Countless years ago he came to this world, a servant of The Dark One. The task completed, he was chosen to remain behind, to prepare for the second coming. The Dark One shall return in triumph to reign for eternity over the unliving. He no longer remembers the name he was gifted with. Nor the race to which he belongs. (He is a demon). Since his acceptance as an earthly servant of the Corruptor he has spent time as all races, transformed by the power of his God. He has travelled from the volcanoes of Choon to the Trackless Snows on the Great Work. He has lead several lifetimes, either sustained by his faith or by the lifespan of his original race, he knows not. His life has been subsumed to become the tool of Corruption. No pity, no remorse, no feelings, no family. The task is all. The fear, anger and betrayal of his victims is his sustenance. By his work alone is he known: The Plague of Daria - 450 people, leaders, generals, merchants, all died under his sword in a two year reign of terror. The Blade of Arindel - 37 generals and their aides fell during the wars with the Duchy of Irolo. Countless others have fallen before him, kings and peasants all. Elves and Lizard men - whereever the good and lawful did rise he was there to pull them back into the mud. He has yet to fail in his missions. There will not be a first time. Two years ago he slew the real Balron Battlethirst absorbing his knowledge and soul with the death spells of the Cult. The real Balron's body now rests in Daemons Cleft, where his soul will soon join it. His blessed Axe was corrupted, turning against all that it was bound to serve. While at Daemons Cleft, he saw the growing numbers of the spawn of evil gathering. He has gathered them to worship (through evangelism and compulsion) of the Corruptor, making them ready for the time that is at hand. When he succeeds at conquering the dungeon, they shall answer his summons, sweeping the area. Leaving Daemons cleft only a month ago, he has travelled to Derisnospewn on foot, recharged and revitalised to await those who will fullfil the prophecy. He is currently staying in the first taven he came to - appropriately enough, The Dying Daemon...
Balron was born in the city of Strongwall while his parents were trading, his mother dying in childbirth. His father, Boron the White, immediately remarried the daughter of the local Dwarven chieftain, Aknot. Returning to the Drakor Mountains, the lived in peace for some years until Boron died in mysterious circumstances. Balron's stepmother placed him as an apprentice to the guard and then left to return to her family in Ararn. Years passed and Balron became renowned for his skills at fighting. He dedicated his life to following the footsteps of Kragdin Battlemaster, a legendary dwarven hero. When he was finally appointed to the guard a priest of Kragdin gave him and blessed battleaxe, saying it would defend him against the most evil of monsters. He gained a reputation as a dependable and trustworthy warrior, one that you could trust your back to in combat, during several major battles with the humanoids that roamed the area. Eventually his captain, jealous of his rising prestige, sent him with a small troop into the wilds north of the mountains to investigate some rumours of monsters gathering in the ruined city. Monsters indeed gathered, and in battle his troop was slain. He managed to escape, travelling north to Derisnospewn to recuperate before trying to return to his beloved homeland.
The Cult of the Corruptor. The cult began evolving after the fall of the Calinadian Empire, starting with a membership of one. Left behind by the Corruptor, his minion was to prepare the way. Since that time, the cult has grown slowly. It's numbers are small, but they are effective. Dark Witches, Monster Chieftains, Merchant Princes - those to whom power is important - eventually fall before his coercive power. Those who resist do not do so for long. The Witchwood contains the largest concentration of the Cult - several covens make their homes there, ruling over the monsters and evil humans. From there, messages and tasks make their way slowly across the Western Shores, inevitably resulting in the promotion of evil. With a few wellplaced agents, the cult controls a large portion of the Grand Range, blocking all trade to the east. Raids on the Dwarves, Elves and Ambria are on the increase, culminating in who knows what... Very few people even know of the cults existance - members do not meet, do not perform rituals. They do as they are instructed and reap the benefits. They act with their own autonomy when necessary. Ancient manuscripts mention the Cult, especially in relation to major disasters of the distant past - nothing recently. Shrines to the Corruptor litter the countryside. Only those who can recognise the signs will notice them, but others often become uneasy in their presence. Animals avoid the areas.
